Happy New Year From BirdOculars

I hope this post finds all of you in good health and looking forward to another year of enjoying your backyard birds.  It’s been unseasonably cold here in TN for the past week or so and I’ve been extra busy making sure all my birds have enough to eat and drink.  Because I don’t have a birdbath heater (bath sits too far at the back of yard and solar seem a bit pricey and not foolproof) I go out twice a day with my rubber mallet to break up the ice and refill with room temperature water.  I also make sure they have enough seeds and my home made peanut butter suet to keep them warm.  It’s a little bit more work than usual but I don’t mind because they repay me tenfold with the enjoyment I get from watching them.

How are things going in your neck of the woods?  Any particular challenges?  From what I gather, we are not the only part of the country being hard frozen so far this winter.  How has your winter birdfeeding routine been changed?  What novel ways have you found to keep your little guys fed and happy?

Leave me a quick comment below so we can all learn from your experience.

What Did You Get Your Birds For Christmas?

Paying Them Back

When you’re looking over your Christmas list or lists, are you remembering those that provide you with so much pleasure year round?  I don’t know what I would do sometimes if I weren’t able to just take a break from my at home business to watch the little ones feed and fuss at each other.  It makes my heart glad to know I’m helping them to grow and prosper but they help me as well in ways they’ll never understand.

That’s why I like to offer a special treat around the holidays.

My Covert Downy Woodpecker Spy

Ever Get The Feeling You’re Being Watched?

downypeekingSince the weather has turned colder at night I’ve had this sneaky suspicion I’m being watched every morning.  As usual, my chihuahua/yorkie mix, Maggie and I go out before 6 AM.  The last few mornings, however, I’ve felt there were eyes on us.  I looked around and saw nothing.  Then, I looked at my closest bluebird box and I spotted him.  The little black and white head with the red spot on top gave him away.  I had an overnight tenant.  It was one of my downy woodpecker backyard residents.  I had seen him looking around before and had actually put some nesting materials in the box to help him out.  Apparently, he really appreciated the gesture because I’ve noticed he’s put them to good use plugging up the drafty corners on the floor of the nestbox.

BirdOculars.com Site To Be Rebuilt

It Was Never About The Money

Over two years ago, I set out to build a blog where I could share and swap birding stories and information with people who had similar interests.  I added a binoculars section to help pay the bills and to present products I thought my readers would be interested in.  Unfortunately, I didn’t know what I was doing and the site started to take on a look of a store rather than a blog.  I’ve learned a lot since I started the blog and I’m going to make some changes.  Here are some of them.

Feeding Activity Starting To Pick Up

Days Are Getting Cooler

We’re finally starting to see more daytime temperatures here in Nashville around the 60s and 70s. The night temps are dropping too. That can mean only one thing in my backyard…feeding activity is picking up as the little ones burn more fuel to stay warm.

This leaves me asking you one important question…

My Nightly Robin Birdbath Assault

robinbath250

It never ceases to amaze me how smart birds can be. Most humans see them as things lucky enough to fly wherever they need to go that spend the majority of their time looking for food. While this may be true to a large extent, they are also capable of some very intelligent flock behavior. My nightly birdbath entertainment is a perfect example.
