Which Birding Software Do You Use? [ September 1st, 2010 ] Posted in » Birding Software, Blog

Birding Software Is About Features

Most serious birders have their favorite birding software.  The reasons are many but usually come down to which features each birder considers important to them.  Some want a handy smartphone app that they know they’ll have with them and others want a more complete birding reference that goes beyond quick identification.  Still others use a combination depending on where they are going to be.  Where do you lie on this continuum?

The Bluebirds Make A Last Minute Charge

If You Snooze You Lose

OK.  Things are heating up in the backyard.  Less than a month after reporting the chickadees had staked their claim , the bluebird pair shows up and won’t hear any of that noise.

Late last week, I started hearing bluebirds chattering in my back yard.  Since I almost never hear that sound unless they are nest building, I had to take a look.  Sure enough, there was mom and pop bluebird on top of the nest box I thought the chickadees had claimed.

The next thing I know, mom is gathering grass and taking it into the box while pop stood guard.  This went on most of the day and the next.  They returned after that just to admire their handiwork.  They’ve been by everyday since then.  When I checked the box yesterday, it looked like they had put more nesting material than the little bit of moss the chickadees had but were far from finished.  This leads me to wonder if they’re not just marking their nest as well.

Who Will Win The Race?

Tell me what you think by leaving a comment below.  Do you think the chickadees will make a last stand and finish the nest to their specifications or do you think the race for the nesting box is all over but the shouting?  I’ll be checking the box once daily to see who’s leading.  Don’t worry I’m a pro and will not check it so much they both decide to bail.  I’ve been doing this long enough to know better.
