What To Do With My House Wrens

I Needed Some Expert Birding Advice

The house wrens in my back nestbox are filling that thing until it’s spilling out the front.  I emailed Julie Zickefoose, writer, artist and birding expert to ask what I should do about them.

Julie told me as long as the house wrens are allowed to build their nest back there I won’t have any problems. The only thing I needed to do is remove anything they put in the other bluebird box so they don’t get ideas about usurping the entire backyard.  She also said if anything prevents them from nesting back there I would have my hands full.  The wrens would most likely go on the rampage and empty out any box they might want.  This includes poking holes in eggs and doing anything nasty they could to other birds even thinking about nesting in a box this season.  Julie actually used the term “powder keg” to refer to what I would have to deal with.  She has never steered me wrong and I believe she knows what she’s talking about.

Live And Let Live

I’m going to take her advice and allow them to build their nest and raise their young.  I’ll remove anything they put in my closest box and see what happens.  I’m hoping that everybody agrees to play fair and only use their own box for raising young.  I will update you with how it’s going.
